The literature on NGOs and civil society has increased dramatically in recent years. A lot of what has been written has been self-servingly commissioned and published by those western and Global North interests with most to gain from attempts to influence and dominate nations and societies in the Global South. This has generated and continues to generate an echo-chamber embracing calls for globalisation and the need for western-funded and cloned NGOs transplanting “civil society” in the South. Fortunately there have also been growing numbers of academics and activists and some governments who have pushed back on the false narrative that western funding of NGOs is innately positive or that Third World NGOs and “civil society” funded by the Global North somehow automatically represents the interests of people within the developing world.
